I already told you about how Gray law enforcement officers are just one part of the Gray military. I guess we can talk about some of the other parts.

Warships look cool, don’t they? Some of them are so big that they can’t land on planets (or can only land in an emergency). The Gray, Light, and Dark are in an arms race for who can build better ships: faster ships, better hulls, better shields, more powerful weapons, all that shit. Currently, the Gray is winning. No other military comes close to the Gray, and that isn’t even counting the Neutral alliance which always goes to war next to the Gray.

Mind you, the Gray has to have better ships, because it doesn’t have parrei. The Light gods and the Dark gods love to interfere in mortal affairs, but the Gray gods don’t give a shit.

There’s a whole military complex with a strict hierarchy and various divisions and so much other bullshit that military types salivate over. At the moment, there are no wars. Both the Gray and the Light hate the Dark, and there are occasional incidents, but everyone is being careful to avoid starting an actual war. The Gray keeps plenty of warships along the border of the disputed region between it and the Dark — and they often sneak ships into the disputed region, even though they aren’t supposed to. The Dark does too, so I suppose that’s fair enough. The Gray also maintains a fleet near the border to Light territory, though it’s a smaller and wussier fleet since the Gray currently gets along with the Light. Well, as much as the Gray and the Light ever get along.

The rest of the Gray fleet is scattered around Gray space, though there are some ships in Neutral space too. There’s also a big presence around Diresi, since you’ve got to protect your capital where all your important people live.

The Admirals run the military. The five of them argue a lot, but in the end they usually agree. Or three of them agree and the other two go along with it, provided that one of the three who agreed was Daiyu. Daiyu is the Fate Admiral, and as such the leader of the Gray and the most powerful person in the Gray. And a twat, but that goes without saying for a Fate worshiper. You won’t see the Admirals agree on anything unless Daiyu is one of those in favor of it.

There’s a honking big tower in the middle of Diresi — not as tall as the five main temples, because that’s a big no-no, but only a little shorter. That’s the command tower for the Gray military. That’s where everything related to the military gets decided, and the five Admirals all work there. It’s in five sections, like pretty much everything in Diresi. Life is on the east wing, Death on the west, Order is to the north, while Chaos is to the south. Fate, of course, is in the middle, because Fate rules the Gray alliance. Fate is Balance, so half is job is to keep Order and Chaos from ripping each other apart and to keep Life and Death as far away from each other as possible. That’s a shit job, but Fate picked it, so I’ve got no sympathy. The various worshipers get along better than their respective deities (mostly because it’d be hard to be worse), but they still argue a lot.

The Admirals always try to make it look like they get along and agree on everything. The Gray knows that’s bullshit, but the Gray is fine with that. No one likes to argue quite as much as a Gray path.

Number Systems

I like numbers — not just number properties (although I definitely like those, hello number theory!) but the actual numbers. In particular, I’ve been into number systems recently. Number system means the symbols and values we use for numbers. We’ve got a […]
